If April Showers Bring May Flowers, What do May Showers Bring?

Hello all! We did indeed get more rain this week, it is soggy ’round here! On Wednesday we got over 3 inches (not quite 3 1/4 inches) bringing our grand total to nearly 10 inches of rain in 6 days. And, still, we’re lucky. A little further south of us they got over 15 inches of rain in that same time period.

But now we’ve had two sunny days in a row! The rivers are receding, the highways are reopening, and those that had flood damage are cleaning up and repairing. Continue reading

We’re Building an Ark and Loading the Animals Two by Two…

It’s been a rainy weekend in mid-Missouri, boy oh boy has it ever. We have a rain gauge on the farm and we’ve recorded approximately 6 1/2 inches from Friday to this morning. That’s a lot of rain but we’re actually lucky because areas to the south of us had more than 10 inches of rain dumped on them, 10 inches of rain in less than 2 days! We’ve had a very wet few weeks and the ground is already saturated so all of this rain has resulted in major flooding. Seriously guys, it’s legitimately historic flooding (which actually seems to happen every year or two but the numbers don’t lie!).  Continue reading

Flashback Friday: Building the Shed, Week 3

It’s another Flashback Friday and we’re gonna raise the roof! That’s what you do after you put the walls up. 🙂

Before I bought the roofing materials for the shed I did a lot of research on different types of roofs. There are a lot of options but I went with a metal roof to keep with the farmhouse aesthetic I want for the homestead. I priced a few different stores and ended up going with the Pro-Rib from Menards, you can order it in lengths cut to the exact size you need and it’s very reasonably priced. Continue reading

Flashback Friday: Building the Shed, Week 2

It’s Friday! Gracias a Dios es Viernes (Thank God it’s Friday)! I had a Colombian coworker once and he was determined to teach me Spanish, that’s one of the few things I remember lol. 🙂 It is a glorious 60 degrees on this beautiful Spring morning (60 degrees at 8 in the morning! This is what I live for.) and there’s a chance of some thunderstorms this afternoon. I LOVE a good thunderstorm, as long as they aren’t damaging.

I thought I’d post another Flashback Friday on the shed construction. This week I’m going to share all the fun of framing! Yes, it’s as exciting as it sounds. 🙂 Continue reading

Brrrr, Baby It’s Cold Outside

Winter is back! Hopefully for its final “hurrah!”, I’ve lost my cold weather tolerance. The last couple days have been cold and drizzly with occasional flurries, perfect weather for staying in. Which is what I’ve done and it’s been wonderful! Of course we have to do all of the chores (feeding and watering everyone, milking the goats, collecting eggs, and watering all the plants in the greenhouse) but once all of that is done we’ve been taking it easy. Continue reading

Flashback Friday: Building the Shed, Week 1

Over a three day period in September 2015, my Dad and Uncle poured the foundation for my shed! I helped with what I could but I can’t take credit for doing too much. 🙂

It may seem really backwards to start my homestead by building a potting shed first. The reason we chose to do it that way was so I could use the shed as storage until the house is complete, which could be a couple years (I’m not financing the construction, I’m paying out of pocket as we go and we’re doing all of the work ourselves). Continue reading

Baby Calves and More

I’m going to start off by posting a couple pictures I meant to post yesterday. I totally fell asleep watching TV last night and woke up at a very unreasonable hour and decided it just wasn’t worth getting my laptop out. So, here it is:

This little nugget was born right in front of me yesterday morning when I was feeding my horse, Zip, and filling the cattle stock tanks.

The pic isn’t the greatest, I didn’t want to spook the mama & baby. This little guy is literally just 5 seconds old!
