Life on the farm: Some days it’s sunshine & butterflies, other days you slip and fall in a mud puddle…

Eh, at least it wasn’t a big muddy, poo puddle! That happens sometimes too. 🙂

After I fell in the puddle I decided it was going to be a work inside day, I’d finished all of my morning chores and it’s been raining on and off all morning. Besides, I’ve got plenty of things to catch up on. So here I am, freshly showered (I was really covered in mud, it was even in my hair) and ready to get to work.

Last week I celebrated my birthday. Normally I plan big, elaborate theme parties, I LOVE a good theme party. This year has been a little crazy and I just feel a little out of sorts, so there was no big party this year. Instead, I had a quiet dinner with my parents and grandma. A dinner we cooked over an open fire! I love cooking outside, it’s one of my favorite things to do and I just haven’t done enough of it since I moved to the country. We cooked mushrooms, potatoes w/ onions, corn on the cob, and hotdogs. We also had cole slaw and a tomato cucumber salad. Best birthday dinner ever. Best part of all? We made s’mores for dessert instead of cake! Aaahhhh, that’s the life. 🙂

Making our yummy dinner over the fire!

Maybe I’ll feel like planning a big party next year, or maybe I’ll decide to cook my birthday dinner over an open fire again. 🙂

We live near a small town, I mean it’s not Mayberry small but it’s pretty darn small. There’s been a hardware store/lumberyard in town for decades, possibly since back in my great-grandparents day. Well, horror of all horrors, a NEW hardware store opened. GASP! There can’t be two hardware stores, there just can’t be! People around here don’t take to change very well… or new businesses apparently lol. The new hardware store is an Ace store and it’s pretty small but has better hours than the lumberyard so I just see it as a plus. The new Ace store had their grand opening over the weekend and some people declared that anyone who went was a traitor. A traitor to what? I’m not really sure. I clearly have no loyalties because I went to the grand opening. Hey, they were having some really good sales and giving away 5 gallon buckets! A 5 gallon bucket is like gold on a farm. Plus they were raffling off some good prizes, my dad won a Weber barbecue grill. He got his picture taken with it, it’ll be in the newspaper (yes, our town is that small but at least we have our own newspaper 🙂 ).

I thought I’d tell you about my “haul” from the grand opening because, I’ll admit it, I’m a shopaholic (mostly reformed but I still love a good deal). So the deal was anything you fit in your 5 gallon bucket was 20% off (excluding power tools and sale items), come on! That’s awesome! AND the bucket it is free?! Get outta my way! Ok, so I get a little excited about a good sale and, man, did I max out my bucket. 🙂 Here’s what I got:

  • Rayovac 100 lumen LED lantern
  • 2 quick grip clamps w/ 300 lb grip capacity
  • duct tape
  • 2 rolls of painters tape
  • wood glue
  • 2 hanging plant brackets (for my potting shed 🙂 )
  • Hot glue gun and 2 packs of glue sticks
  • Small LED light with a work light and a flashlight, also has a magnet on the back & a pivoting hook on top (you can never have too many flashlights on the farm)
  • A pack of 10 marking flags (those will be handy when I’m laying things out up at DaisyDoo Homestead)
  • An outdoor thermometer
  • A sanding block (for my crafty wood projects)
  • Noise reducing earmuffs

I got all that in my bucket! I probably could have fit a few more small things in but I think I did pretty well. I also got a few sale items, I mean the sales were ridiculous.

  • 6 pack of Craftsman spring clamps (for $4.99!)
  • Stanley ratcheting screwdriver w/ 10 bits (for $2.99, are you serious?! Yes, I am!)
  • 3 pack of scissors (for $1.50, it was actually 2 packs for $3.00 but I only got one and now I’m kicking myself).

Here’s my haul from the Ace grand opening!

So I’ll go on record as saying that I do indeed love the new hardware store. Call me a traitor but I love it. 🙂

In other news from the farm: the new stalls in the barn are almost done! Dad hung the last gate this morning, the only thing left to do is build a wall to divide the middle stall into two 7 ft x 12 ft stalls instead of 14 ft x 12 ft like the other two larger stalls. Then my new horse can come! I’m hoping he can be delivered later this week or early next week. I’ll keep you guys posted!

I’m gonna enjoy the rest of this rainy afternoon. 🙂 Until next time!

Cheers,

D
